Why Ceylon was renamed as Sri Lanka?

Ceylon was the English name derived from the Portuguese name for the island. It was igned to it and the name is not native to the island. It was renamed Sri Lanka which means Sacred Island in sanskrit in 1972 upon its independence as a Republic separate from the Commonwealth.
